Like its namesake filet, the neighborhood of Tenderloin is a prime slice of San Francisco with some hidden gems.
The Tenderloin neighborhood isn’t going to welcome you with open arms. Its guarded and selective nature is exactly why this San Francisco pocket has resisted gentrification and remained a bastion of activism amidst complicated politics and money-wielding players fighting over the neighborhood like, well, a cut of tenderloin.
While visitors are often told to “watch your step,” due to street conditions, it’s actually the right idea. Look down, but don’t look down on Tenderloin, because otherwise, you might miss the magic of this neighborhood. These 11 gems scattered throughout this resilient-yet-vulnerable community, will prove why you should add Tenderloin to your San Francisco itinerary.
This article is very irresponsible, and inaccurate -- an example of where journalism is going and why people need to be careful of what they read.
As I San Francisco local for over 24 years, I whole heartedly agree that all the 11 spots here are treasure to SF, special sacred places (especially Aunt Charlie's and Boozeland, two of my favorite places), tourists read this stuff and then have no idea what they're walking into. The intro to this article romanticizes the consequences of failing capitalism and a greedy local government that pretends they care for the people. And NO, god NO, this area did not manage to avoid gentrification, are you blind?! Blatant lie. Gentrification is at the heart of why this neighborhood is so dangerous and sad. To all readers who are visiting our beautiful city, don't go to the Tenderloin alone, or even at all unless you have street smarts and some experience with high level social issues like homelessness, mental illness, and drug addicts. I wish sites like this would stop writing nonsense articles because they get paid to fake a reality that doesn't exist. It puts people in danger.
I've been mugged just once in my 50+ years and that was at knifepoint in broad daylight in the Tenderloin. The mugger, who was parolee, was quickly caught just a block away and was released without charge.
Thank you for this lovely introduction to my neighborhood! While this is a neighborhood of ill repute, i have lived here since 2007 and hope to jever leave! It has all the charm promised.
The reputation we have for "having excess crime" is ridiculous in a city known for it's high crime rate. If you plan to visit, you will have been warned about car break-ins, muggings, and such... just like NYC, Chicago, or other major city. They do happen in SF everywhere tho, not just in the Tenderloin.
One request: if you come to our beautiful neighborhood, please shop in one of our bodegas, buy a knick knack from The Love Store or off a blanket, buy an empanada... we appreciate the support. And i think if "tourists" are seen as supporters of our community, rather than possible gentrifiers, you will be welcomed with open arms.
our neighborhood is one of love, after all... cheers!
Really?? I was in this area in my honeymoon because we were walking from The Painted Ladies to Union Square... This block is dangerous, full of waste, drugged young people, thousands of beggars, cops scorting kids to the school... never in my life I have been so scared...
SF has a lot of beautiful areas but this it is the worst.
This article is dangerous. Lived in San Francisco for decades and the Tenderloin has a lot of history and interesting stores and sites, but the TENDERLOIN IS DANGEROUS. DO NOT GO BY YOURSELF OR AT NIGHT. When I go I go daytime with pepper spray and whistle in my hands out and ready to use.Been using Fodor's as a travel reference for decades, used to buy your books.
You have lost me on this article. I DO NOT TRUST YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS anymore.
Going to France and Vienna next month and I can't imagine reading an article like this and going into a known dangerous area without warning so I can take precautions to be safe.Very disappointed as you used to be reliable and responsible.
Bunny, did you visit these sites yourself or did you just repost Instagram?
That's not research or journalism, that's lazy and irrresponsible. And I can search Instagram by myself.
I naively just realized all of these "articles" are just Instagram reposts.
What are we supposed to do now? Rely on Trip Advisor??
