As you drive into the mountains southwest of Santo Domingo you enter another world. The major city in this region is Barahona, a smoky, noisy city that is among the least cosmopolitan of any in the Dominican Republic. The region is known for its larimar mines and for a few beautiful boutique resorts up on the mountains and on the beautiful, undeveloped beaches south of Barahona.
