History and nature meet on the Tantramar salt marshes east of Moncton. Bounded by the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy, the province of Nova Scotia, and the Northumberland Strait, the region is rich in history and culture. The inspiration for Canadian artists such as Alex Colville and of poets from Sir Charles G. D. Roberts to Douglas Lochhead, the marshes provide a highly productive wetland habitat, and the region is among North America's major migratory bird routes.

The white sands and gentle tides of the Northumberland Strait and Baie des Chaleurs are in stunning contrast to the rocky cliffs and powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy. Along the Acadian Coast the water is warm, the sand is fine, and the food delicious. Many people here find their livelihood in the forests, in the mines, and on the sea, and along the Acadian Peninsula working wharves are an attraction within themselves.
