The small mountain town of Ketchum and the adjacent resort village of Sun Valley, tucked deep in the Rocky Mountain peaks, have unusually large numbers of Cadillacs and fur coats for an Idaho town. As the first destination ski resort in the United States, Sun Valley (and nearby Ketchum) has a posh collection of artists and galleries, gourmet dining, designer shops, and a long-standing Hollywood following. But on the periphery, just outside this small cluster of civilization, is a vast and untamed wilderness rife with adventure. Its famed Nordic skiing, mountain biking, angling, and backpacking has spawned a subculture of ski bums and outdoors fanatics who call this place heaven.
