Originally named Mecklenburg, Shepherdstown claims to be the oldest continuously settled community in the state. Thomas Shepherd purchased the grant to the land in 1732, and some of his descendants live in the town to this day. Shepherdstown retains much of its historic charm, particularly on German Street, where many of its shops, restaurants, and attractions are located.
