The first ship in the ambitious new Virgin Voyages fleet saw maverick Richard Branson make his debut in the cruising world in 2021. Billed as a premium luxury super yacht style cruise ship that regular cruisers (called sailors in Virgin parlance) can afford, with Scarlet Lady, Virgin aimed to disrupt the way things are usually done in the industry by providing WiFi for free, making gratuities a part of the total cost, and offering group fitness classes at no extra charge. Plus, the ships’ 20 dining destinations on board are built into the price of a cruise. Essential beverages—still and sparking water, juices, sodas, fine teas and drip coffee—are also included. Read More

Frequent cruisers will notice other things that are decidedly left of center, like the vessel’s tattoo parlor, vinyl record shop, gender neutral bathrooms, lack of children (Virgin Voyages are for 18+), and playful inappropriate puns, such as in the name of the Scarlet Lady’s ice cream parlor. Sexy theatrical shows, pool parties, and dance club nights that rave on deep into the night, carry on the racy vibes. Virgin promotes acceptance at every turn, imbuing their ships with the motto, “Come as You Are” a nod to the Nirvana hit.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Pros
Cons
Gratuities, internet access, groups fitness classes, and all dining is included
Late night and overnight stays keep the party going on land
Sea Terrace rooms feature balcony hammocks
There’s a lack of live music on board (surprising, considering Branson’s music industry pedigree)
Only four- or five-day voyages are currently offered
It’s not a ship for families (which may be a pro, depending on the guest)

What to expect on board

Staterooms & Cabins

Cabins
Accessibility

Scarlet Lady cabins are adaptable, customizable, and extremely comfortable. Featuring some of the most dreamy mattresses at sea, guests can rest assured that after days and nights of parties on deck and in port, they will get the rest needed to wake up and do it all again. If passengers make friends on board, or if they just want more space to chill out in their room, the bed can be tucked away to allow for the space to serve as more of a living room.

Mood lightning transforms the cabins with the touch of a button, and everything else inside is also controllable by the tablet docked on the desk or the Virgin app. Four sleek cabin types can be found on Scarlet Lady, ranging from a windowless Insider interior room; Sea View rooms containing a classic porthole to peek outside; Sea Terraces with the aforementioned handwoven red hammock chair for outdoor lounging, and RockStar Quarters suites (350 to 2,000+ square feet) that boast bathtubs, electric guitars, and private hot tubs. Over 85 percent of all cabins have a balcony and 93 percent come with a view of the sea. All have a 4K flat screen HDTV, mini bars, flexible wardrobes, and rain showers. Solo insider cabins that are designed for and priced exclusively for solo sailors are available.

Scarlet Lady offers accessible cabins across all classes, each adhering to ADA rulings with designs which have been reviewed by an ADA consultant. Entrance doorways are over 33 inches wide, bathrooms have flat-floor entrances, folding shower benches, and a generous turning radius of 1525mm, with grab rails and emergency pull cords. Accessible Sea Terrace rooms provide balcony access without any steps.

Food & Drink

Dining
Bars

With all food included in the cost of the cruise, passengers on Scarlet Lady are able to enjoy fine dining at the Test Kitchen, elevated Mexican cuisine at Pink Agave, vegetarian fare at Razzle Dazzle (though plant-based meat alternatives can be found across venues) and traditional Korean BBQ dinner at Gunbae. The food hall gets points for its big-city-quality ramen, and 24-hour room service is also an option, making it easy to be a vegan or vegetarian on Scarlet Lady. Note: because every restaurant is available to every guest, it is important to make reservations early to guarantee access to all the dining destinations guest’s wish to try.

While waters, sodas, juices, teas and coffee are included in the price of a cruise on Scarlet Lady, experiencing the first-class beverage program on board will cost you. Partnering with talented mixologists, Virgin booze offerings (and every restaurant has unique offerings) are enticing and arguably well worth the extra spend—beers are priced between $5-6, basic cocktails at $9, and wine around $10 a glass, gratuity included.

Entertainment

Editor Rating

Sailors will find an entirely different kind of entertainment onboard Scarlet Lady. There are no glitzy Broadway hand-me-downs on stage here, but rather, Virgin Voyages strives to be an incubator for experimental, immersive, and innovative productions from the world’s burgeoning choreographers, artists, and directors. The highlight of the stage shows is Duel Reality, a modern acrobatic retelling of Romeo and Juliet that is at first confusing but quietly becomes a moving, powerhouse of a performance. What guests will be buzzing about the most, however, is Never Sleep Alone, a theatrical sex therapy cabaret show that must be experienced to be believed.

Spa & Fitness

Editor Rating

All group exercise classes, including sun-rise yoga, spinning classes, meditation sessions, and HIIT workouts are complimentary in the fitness center, and around the ship. Boxing rings and punching bags are outside on the deck, guided hikes are offered in certain ports, and a deck 17 wellness space and jogging track show that well-being is at the core of the Virgin Voyages brand.

With so much included in the cost of the cruise, the spa is one of the few places on board where guests may find themselves spending money. A variety of classic spa treatments are available from massages to seaweed wraps, as well as a blowout bar, medi spa, sauna, mudroom, and more.

Key cruising tips

Health & Safety

Virgin promises an extensive cleaning process and high-tech air filtration system to keep everyone safe on board the ship. Should a guest test positive for COVID during the cruise, Virgin will provide free medical care and testing, as well as a prorated daily Voyage credit for any days you’ve missed.

Should a guest test positive prior to sailing, Virgin has a credit and refund policy.

Dress Code

The “Come as You Are” vibe extends to the dress, which is left to the discretion of individual Sailors. Note: Scarlet Night events don’t require the color red, but to blend in with the crowd, packing something sparkly and crimson for a voyage on the Scarlet Lady isn’t a bad idea.

Junior Cruisers

No one under 18 is allowed on board.

Service

Individuality is a hallmark of the Scarlet Lady cruise staff, but in no way does the casual attire of the staff translate to less-than-stellar service. From the cabin stewards to restaurant servers, guests will interact with a diverse, funky, and fun crew eager to show all passengers a good time on board.

Tipping

All gratuities are included in the cost of the cruise on Scarlet Lady.
