Little India

One of the most easily recognized parts of the city, this area east of the Singapore River and across from Chinatown was designated as Little India during colonial rule. It has since become one of the most vibrant parts of the city. In what's still the cultural center for Singapore's large Indian community, you'll find shops selling saris, flower garlands, and all the necessary ingredients for an Indian meal; restaurants with touts encouraging potential diners to sample their offerings; Hindus and others off to visits temples; and streets bustling with people. Many backpackers stay in the budget hostels set up along Dunlop Road; recently boutique hotels have also began to appear in the area.
