In 1864 the vast park here—which extends from North Avenue to Foster Avenue—became the city's first public playground. Its zoo is legendary. The area adjacent to it, bordered by Armitage Avenue, Diversey Parkway, the lake, and the Chicago River, took the same name. To the west, in Wicker Park and Bucktown, up-to-the-minute fashions mix with old-world memories and gorgeous Victorian-era architecture. Logan Square, just west of Wicker Park/Bucktown, is notable for its historic buildings and hip restaurants.
