The island of Kizhi is home to one of Russia's oldest open-air museums, which is characterized by beautifully preserved wooden structures. The best know of these are a pair of churches in the Kizhi Pogost, an entirely wooden mini-settlement that made the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1990.
