What to do for our daughter's wonderful Spanish host family this summer?

Our daughter has just completed a fantastic Spanish language and culture program in Alicante. Her program placed her for the six weeks with an older Spanish couple whom she came to adore. They told her she could stay for entire summer if she wanted, and many tears were shed when her departure day arrived. We are very touched and grateful that they took such good care of our daughter, and would like to send them some gift of appreciation. Can the Fodorite Spain experts suggest an appropriate gift or gesture for this wonderful couple? Thanks in advance.

If it were me, I'd expect nothing at all. But in any case, your daughter should know better than us.

I am in no way claiming to have given foreign stufents who may have stayed with us such a good time as this couple gave your daughter.

but when we have had visitors, what has meant most is something personal - a handwritten letter and or card [card may be better if there is a language difference] plus a book about your area of the US, or, what about some flowers or a plant from Interflora or similar?

google will tell you what is available in their area of spain. i have sent flowers etc. to my friend in germany with no problems at all.

regular christmas cards help to keep up the connection too.

regards, ann

annhig - excellent ideas about a book about our area of the U.S. and will also check on Interflora. Many thanks.

I'd include an open invitation for them to visit you and stay in your home. Our family has kept in touch with some of our home-stay guests, one in particular for 45 years now! He and his wife have visited a few times, and several of our family have visited them. It's been a wonderful long-distance friendship.

Your daughter's Spanish can help you send flowers using the internet, just as you would in the states, and I suspect the Spanish couple would also enjoy seeing pictures of all of you and however much you would care to share as an introduction to keeping in touch.

We bring Fossil or hip watches for the men and jewlery for the women to our relatives in Spain. Our relatives also have an unquenchable appetite for Native American objects, jewelry, and books, but this host family may be very different.

Also ask your daughter what the house needs.
