Champasak

In the early 18th century the kingdom of Laos was partitioned into three realms: Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Champasak. During the 18th and 19th centuries this small village on the west bank of the Mekong River was the royal center of a wide area of what is today Thailand and Cambodia. The area's most unique lodging option, with a Robinson Crusoe feel, is La Folie on Don Daeng, an island near Champasak that remains largely untouched by tourism and is an excellent base for visiting Wat Phu and Champasak. The River Resort, just north of Champasak, is upscale and romantic.
