On the Indonesian island of Sumatra—the fourth biggest island in the world—the busy port of Belawan marks the entrance to some fascinating attractions, including the world's largest volcanic lake and a thriving orangutan reserve. The city of Medan is a rather chaotic place that nevertheless retains some interesting Dutch and Chinese architecture from colonial times.
